IZZY Zero Waste Mascara — medical-grade stainless steel, refillable up to 10,000 times, EWG Verified formula

Disclosure: AnthroEvolve and IZZY have a reciprocal linking arrangement — IZZY links to AnthroEvolve in exchange for this feature. This is disclosed in accordance with FTC guidelines. Our editorial policy is unchanged: IZZY's Best Overall position in our guide is based on independently verified credentials and was not influenced by this arrangement.

Most sustainability claims in the beauty industry are packaging claims. A different tube material, a smaller box, a recyclable cap. IZZY is doing something structurally different: they built a closed-loop system where the container never becomes waste at all. The medical-grade stainless steel tube you receive is designed to be cleaned, sterilized, and refilled up to 10,000 times. The reusable mailer comes back to them. The wand bristles go to a specialist recycler. Nothing goes to landfill.

That's not marketing language — it's a verifiable system design. And it's why IZZY earned the Best Overall position in our best zero-waste mascaras guide: not because they have the most certifications on a list, but because the system they've built actually does what it claims to do, and you can trace every step of it.

The Origin: A Dentist's Chair and a Daughter Named Izzy

Chris Tarling — IZZY's inventor and co-founder — spent twenty years designing packaging for prestige beauty brands including MAC and NARS before arriving at a question that changed everything. He was in a dentist's chair, watching a hygienist reach for sterilized metal instruments, and thought: if dental tools can be cleaned and reused safely between patients, why can't a mascara tube?

As an engineer, he already knew the answer: medical-grade sterilization equipment. The same triple-cleaning process used in clinical settings could eliminate all microbial contamination from a metal cosmetics container. Mascara, unlike dental tools, didn't need to withstand surgical loads — just hold a formula and a brush. Stainless steel, which can survive more than 10,000 sanitization cycles, was the obvious material.

While developing prototypes in 2019, his then three-year-old daughter — Isabelle — walked in wearing a shirt that read "No More Waste." As Chris recalls on the brand's own blog: "We have to create a sustainable beauty brand for her generation. This revolutionary sustainable beauty brand will be called Izzy, so I will never forget the reason for creating it." The brand launched in April 2021, during COVID lockdowns, with what they describe as the world's first zero-waste mascara.

Christa's Take

"What strikes me about IZZY's origin is that it starts from an engineering insight rather than a sustainability trend. Chris Tarling looked at how medical sterilization works, applied it to a cosmetics problem, and built a system around the answer. That's a fundamentally different kind of thinking from brands that start with sustainability positioning and then look for products to fit it. The system is the point — and it's why every other sustainability claim IZZY makes holds up, because they all flow from the same design logic."

The Closed-Loop System: How It Actually Works

The term "closed loop" gets used loosely in sustainable beauty. IZZY's version is specific enough to verify step by step.

1

Ship

Your mascara arrives in a reusable mailer made from upcycled materials. No outer cardboard box. No plastic wrap. The $8.99 closed-loop shipping fee covers the entire system.

2

Use

Apply daily for approximately 90 days — the recommended replacement window aligned with ophthalmologist guidance on mascara hygiene.

3

Return

Drop the empty tube into the same reusable mailer. Attach the included prepaid return label. Send it back. Nothing goes in your recycling bin or your bin.

4

Repeat

IZZY's patent-pending triple cleaning process sterilizes the steel tube to medical-grade standard. It's refilled and returned to you — or the next customer. The tube gets lighter to ship every cycle.

The transparency about what gets reused vs what gets recycled is one of IZZY's more honest moves. On their website they confirm: the plastic performance bristles on the wand are separated from returned tubes and sent to a specialist recycling partner where they are melted into industrial plastic pellets — not reused. The stainless steel wand stem and exterior tube are what go through sterilization. This is honest about the system's limits in a way that makes the reuse claims more credible, not less.

The minimal plastic IZZY does use — primarily in wand components — is POM ECO-B, a plant-based resin. Lip applicator tips that can't be reused or recycled are donated to a company that turns them into cushions for students' school chairs. Every material decision has an answer. That's unusual.

Christa's Take

"The wand bristle detail is the one I keep coming back to. Most brands would quietly omit the fact that part of the product can't be fully closed-loop. IZZY puts it on their FAQ page and explains exactly where the bristles go and why. That's the kind of specificity that distinguishes a genuine systems thinker from a marketing team — and it's the same reason I trust the rest of what they say about the system."

The Supply Chain: 400 Miles, Verified

IZZY's supply chain commitment is the most specific and verifiable geographic claim in the zero-waste beauty category. Every component — formula, tube, manufacturing, cleaning facility — sits within a 400-mile radius in the Northeastern United States. As they describe it on their product pages: "Our local manufacturing within a 400-mile radius in the Northeastern US also contributes to a significantly smaller carbon footprint."

The practical implication is not just lower transportation emissions on the first delivery. It's what happens on every refill cycle: the tube travels from the cleaning facility back to the customer, within the same geographic radius, rather than crossing oceans and distribution hubs. Each refill generates a smaller carbon footprint than the last — structural decarbonisation built into the business model, not offset against it.

Why "Two Tesla Charges" Is More Than a Phrase

IZZY's founders have described the supply chain with a memorable benchmark: the entire 400-mile radius could be crossed on two Tesla charges, or one tank of gas. This framing captures something important about how most beauty brands operate by contrast — a formula sourced from Europe, packaging manufactured in China, assembled in a third country, and shipped globally.

IZZY's model means their carbon footprint is calculable, concentrated, and reducible in ways that globally dispersed supply chains are not. It also means that when something goes wrong — a quality issue, a material question, a reformulation need — the partners are reachable within hours rather than days.

For a brand whose core claim is that the system gets better with every cycle, keeping the system local is what makes that claim structurally true rather than aspirationally true.

The Formula: EWG Verified, Performance-First

Sustainable packaging with a formula full of synthetic shortcuts is greenwashing in a different register. IZZY has avoided it: every formula the brand makes meets the rigorous standards of the Environmental Working Group (EWG), which requires that each ingredient individually passes their strictest health safety review — not just the finished product.

Zero Waste Mascara — $27.95 (6.5mL)

EWG Verified Vegan & cruelty-free Medical-grade steel tube American-made tube Water-resistant, not waterproof 196 reviews on site

The formula is made with the same filling base that supplies some of the world's leading prestige beauty brands, adapted throughout with clean ingredients. It delivers buildable, natural-to-dramatic volume, separation, and lift, with a High-Fidelity Wave Brush featuring a dip in the middle for mess-free application. The formula is water-resistant — it resists normal daily wear, humidity, and light moisture without flaking — but it is not fully waterproof. It removes with routine cleansing without requiring harsh removers or aggressive rubbing around the eye area.

Christa's Take

"EWG Verified is the credential I weight most heavily here because of what it actually requires. It's not a 'clean beauty' retailer standard that a brand can achieve by swapping a few flagged ingredients. Every individual ingredient in every IZZY formula has been reviewed by EWG's scientists and confirmed to meet their most stringent standard — fully disclosed, free from chemicals of concern, and manufactured under good practice conditions. For a product applied within millimetres of your eyes every day, that level of independent verification is meaningful."

The Wider Range

IZZY has applied the same closed-loop system design to a growing range beyond the mascara. Every product uses medical-grade stainless steel packaging, arrives in a reusable upcycled mailer, and returns through the same sterilization and refill infrastructure. The full current range includes:

Zero Waste Mascara

The original and hero product. Buildable black, EWG Verified, 6.5mL, $27.95. Medical-grade steel tube refillable up to 10,000 times.

Zero Waste Brow Gel

Four shades: Clear, Blonde, Medium Brown, Brown Black. Plant wax-based formula for flexible all-day hold. Same closed-loop return system.

Glossy Lip Butter

High-shine hybrid: moisturises like a lip balm, finishes like a gloss. Nourishing plant oils and butter base. Refillable steel packaging.

Lip + Cheek Hue

Buildable, flushed tint for lips and cheekbones. Multi-use format in the same closed-loop system as the full IZZY range.

On the subscription model: IZZY offers a subscription that automatically ships a fresh, sterilized refill every 90 days — timed to align with the recommended mascara replacement window. Subscribers receive a discount versus one-off purchases and can pause, skip, or cancel at any time. Returning the tube and mailer is required to avoid restocking fees ($25 for the mascara tube, $5 for the shipper) — a policy that keeps the closed-loop system functioning and honest about its design requirements.

Where IZZY Fits in the Ethical Bathroom

The zero-waste beauty category has a persistent problem: claims that are true in principle but don't hold up in practice. Recyclable packaging that nobody actually recycles. Carbon-neutral certifications that offset rather than eliminate. Refill systems that reduce plastic per purchase without eliminating it. IZZY's system is different because the math gets better over time rather than worse — each refill cycle moves the same steel tube through a shorter journey, generates less shipping weight, and reduces the per-use environmental cost of owning a mascara.

For a consumer who wants the most externally verified, system-level approach to zero-waste makeup currently available — EWG Verified formula, fully disclosed ingredient list, American-made tube, 400-mile supply chain, Good Housekeeping award, and a closed-loop return infrastructure that has been operating since 2021 — IZZY is the answer.

Where you'll see IZZY in our guides: IZZY Zero Waste Mascara is our Best Overall pick in our best zero-waste mascaras guide — the most comprehensively verified closed-loop mascara available, with EWG Verified formula, 400-mile US supply chain, medical-grade stainless steel packaging, and a return and sterilization system that has been proven in operation since 2021.
